Background of the study
The active involvement of youth in environmental sustainability initiatives has gained global recognition as a catalyst for change. In Onitsha South, the youth are emerging as critical agents in promoting environmental awareness, conservation practices, and sustainable development (Chima, 2023). Their engagement ranges from community clean-up campaigns to innovative recycling and conservation projects that address local environmental challenges. Studies suggest that youth-driven initiatives can complement government efforts by fostering a culture of sustainability and resilience (Okafor, 2024). However, the extent of youth involvement and its impact on environmental sustainability in Onitsha South remains underexplored. This study investigates the role of youth in shaping environmental policies and practices, examining how their participation influences community attitudes and behaviors towards sustainability (Chima, 2023). By evaluating the contribution of youth-led initiatives, the research aims to provide recommendations for enhancing their involvement in environmental governance (Okafor, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Onitsha South Local Government Area is confronted with various environmental challenges, yet the potential of youth involvement in addressing these issues remains largely untapped. Despite the existence of numerous youth-led environmental initiatives, there is limited empirical evidence on their effectiveness and impact on sustainable development. The underrepresentation of youth in formal environmental policymaking and governance further limits the community’s ability to implement innovative sustainability solutions. This study seeks to assess the role of youth in environmental sustainability, identifying barriers and opportunities for enhancing their contribution (Chima, 2023).
Objectives of the study:

Research Hypotheses:

Significance of the study
This study will offer crucial insights into the role of youth in environmental sustainability, guiding policymakers and community leaders in harnessing youth potential. The findings will promote greater youth involvement in environmental governance, fostering sustainable development in Onitsha South (Okafor, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing the role of youth in environmental sustainability within Onitsha South Local Government Area.
